Working Class Hero

"Lend me your ears and i'll sing you a song"-With a Little Help From My Friends

"It is for others to judge. I am doing it. I do. I don't stand back and judge -- I do." - John Lennon

"I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together"-I am the Walrus
"You make your own dream. That's the Beatles' story, isn't it? That's Yoko's story. That's what I'm saying now. Produce your own dream. If you want to save Peru, go save Peru. It's quite possible to do anything, but not to put it on the leaders and the parking meters. Don't expect Jimmy Carter or Ronald Reagan or John Lennon or Yoko Ono or Bob Dylan or Jesus Christ to come and do it for you. You have to do it yourself. That's what the great masters and mistresses have been saying ever since time began. They can point the way, leave signposts and little instructions in various books that are now called holy and worshiped for the cover of the book and not for what it says, but the instructions are all there for all to see, have always been and always will be. There's nothing new under the sun. All the roads lead to Rome. And people cannot provide it for you. I can't wake you up. You can wake you up. I can't cure you. You can cure you." - John Lennon

"With our love,we could save the world,if they only knew."-Within you,Without you

"If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace." - John Lennon

"A crowd of people stood and stared, they'd seen his face before..."-A Day In the Life

"When you're drowning, you don't say 'I would be incredibly pleased if someone would have the foresight to notice me drowning and come and help me,' you just scream." - John Lennon

"I know nobody can do no harm, because, happiness is a warm gun,mamma."-Happiness is a Warm Gun
"You don't need anybody to tell you who you are or what you are. You are what you are!" - John Lennon

"you may say I am a dreamer, but I am not the only one, I hope some day, you'll join us, And the world will live as one."
-Imagine

"I don't believe in killing whatever the reason!" - John Lennon

"And in the end,the love you take,is equal to the love you make."-The End

"Guilt for being rich, and guilt thinking that perhaps love and peace isn't enough and you have to go and get shot or something."-1980 - John Lennon

"If you wanna be a hero, well, just follow me."-Working Class Hero

Your post is better and more-to-the-point than the two boring documentaries on Star World. I have wasted the entire morning thinking about Lennon. One thing that is worth pointing out I guess is that we are still singing 'Give Peace a Chance'. You know, he thought he and his song would inspire people to end violence but it hasn't which leads to the question, that will it ever end? It' all very fine creating Utopia but you have to create people as well to live peacefully in an ideal world.

Liked that quote where he says "I can't wake you up. You can wake you up."

Agree with B(h)oots. I only watched "Gimme some truth". It was utter crap. This is very to the point and sums the basic ideas and ideologies of the matured(?) Lennon. How much do you guys know about the early Lennon (pre 1965)? I have very little idea about his ideologies then. If you have something on that, would like to know.

Bilu : I read a book quite aptly titled "The Idiot's Guide to The Beatles". Then there's this site on the net which has either the interviews or the transcript of every interview that The Beatles ever gave officialy. As far as I have figured out from this extremely limited reading, pre-1965 they didn't voice their political opinions publicly but remember it was in 1965 that they were awarded their MBE's (which they returned later on). So, it might be conjectured that they were too docile at that point of time early in their career to speak out openly. It was a bit later, 1966 I guess that Lennon made his first 'big' statement - the 'we are more popular than Jesus" and 'his disciples were ordinary". So, pre-1965, most well-documented Beatles history speaks only about their music and less about their political ideology. However with songs like 'Hard Day's Night' in the pre-1965 period and given Lennon's (in fact all the Fab Four's) background, their working-class ideology is evident.

BTW, Ziggetyzoo and Bilu, which is your favourite(s) Lennon song (solo career)? Mine would be 'Love' and 'Working Class hero' beside 'Imagine'. Personally, except 5-6 songs, I think the lyrics of most of his songs (during his solo career) were pretty crappy. I would say McCartney was abetter song-writer than Lennon. What do you lads say?

@B(h)oots: Working class hero and Jealous guy for me. Both are special to me for different reasons.

Apart from 'Imagine',and 'Working Class Hero',even i don't like any of Lennon's solo stuff.I loved his song writing(some of his seemingly nonsense verses, arising out of everyday stuff like newspapers or cornflakes were awesome),during the Beatles days...but personally i like McCartney's voice more than John's.But Lennon's solo career, albeit short is i think still more 'influential' than Paul's.
I think Bhoot is totally right about the pre 1965 docileness of The Fab Four, back then it was all about their music and not so much bout making statements.
